What is the BIBTM System?

The BIBTM System is a non-surgical, weight-loss device for moderately obese individuals with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30 or more. The device itself is a soft, silicone balloon that is inserted via the mouth into the stomach and filled with sterile saline. The balloon is designed to partially fill the stomach, giving a feeling of fullness. Patients not only feel less hungry, but feel fuller more quickly after small meals. The balloon is removed after six months, with an average weight loss of around 20 kg, however, the total amount of weight loss depends on how well the person maintains lifestyle changes related to eating and exercise.

The Procedure

The BIBTM System is inserted through a simple endoscopic procedure taking less than 20 minutes. The procedure is often performed in an out-patient clinic and the patient can return home the same day.

LAP-BAND AP System

The LAP-BAND AP™ System is a simple reversible surgically implanted device that has safely helped severely obese adults successfully achieve and maintain long-term weight loss. The LAP-BAND APTM System is suitable for severely obese adults with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or more, or for adults with a BMI of 35 plus and at least one severe obesity-related health condition (eg. type 2 diabetes, hypertension and asthma).

What is the LAP-BANDTM AP System?

The LAP-BANDAPTM System was developed to help long-term weight loss and reduce the health risks associated with severe and morbid obesity. Unlike gastric bypass, it does not involve stomach cutting, stapling or intestinal re-routing.

Using laparoscopic (key hole) surgical techniques, an inflatable silicone band is placed around the top portion of the patient’s stomach, creating a small pouch. The LAP-BAND APTM System works by reducing a person’s stomach capacity and creating an earlier feeling of satiety, or fullness. The LAP-BAND APTM System is adjustable, which means that the inflatable band can be tightened or loosened by injecting saline via the access port, helping the patient achieve a level of satiety while maintaining a healthy diet.Obesity is a chronic disease that requires lifelong treatment, so the LAP-BAND APTMSystem is designed to remain in place for the duration of a patients’ life.However, it is also reversible and can be removed at any time with no permanent physiological changes, should it be necessary.

A Team Approach

Because the LAP-BAND APTM System is a tool to help patients achieve weight loss, it cannot cure the root cause of obesity without significant lifestyle and behavioral changes from the patient and the help of a multi-disciplinary team.
